முதல் நாவலான இது, முதல் வாசிப்பில் எனக்கு சிறந்த வாசிப்பு அனுபவத்தை அளிப்பதாக இருக்கிறது.அதிகம் சொல்லப்படாத கதையை இந்த நாவல் சொல்லியிருப்பதாக கருதுகிறேன்.அதுவும் ஆங்கிலத்தில், தமிழ் வாழ்க்கை அழகாக பதிவாகியிருக்கிறது.

The White Dalit- An untold and well told story oa Tamil youth.
Reading a novel can be a roller coaster experience sometimes. Certainly, White Dalit, a debut novel by journalist and writer S. S. Arjun is one such novel.
I call it a rollercoaster experience because, the novel begins with the uncharted territory and thereby rises the expectation about something untold and then builds on that expectation but slowly devotes from that, thereby disappointing. Having said that novel towards the end somehow makes up for that and delivers it’s message.
Well what is that message. I think it is a often untold story of a dalit, described with all its emotions in the backdrop of a hot , humid, dusty Hamlet of cuddalore district in TN.
And this story of Pandurangan begins with his brutal handling of the police in connection with a attack tragedy. He returns from custody to his home.
Why he is interrogated by police. What he had done. It seems he is innocent. But police inspector is trying to frame him. What he is going to do.
These are some of the questions comes to the readers mind and makes for intense reading.
With references to attack tragedy, the normal practice of consuming illicit attack and it’s part in village life is well described. Along the easy., caste equations are also underlined subtly.
It seems a battle between the dominant Vanniyar caste – so boldly mentioning the caste – the often poor and powerless Dalit.
It is an often seen incident in the state. But for the first time a novel goes behind this scene and try to portray the painful life.
As a ordinary salt boy, pandurangan and his families journey through this painful ordeal is beautifully woven.
Not only that, even in that grim background we are able to peek in to the day to day life of dalits.
Police enquires, threatening, false help all comes along. Pandurangan is clueless.
Well we expects some thing big from here. But then it becomes a individual story of pandurangan. With turn of events he become free and self confident.
He becomes a white Dalit. It is sort of metaphor. And the writer has beautifully written about pandurangan’s obsession with fair skin and the way in which he seeks remedy for this in white talcum powder.
S. S. Arjun shows subtle humor in this and also when he describes pandas thoughts on god’s and religious matters.
This novel is not only a rollercoaster but a eyeopener in to the world of Dalits.
Some of the characters like in mayandi, uncle kuppan are interesting. We haven’t seen such people in of in Tamil novels.
This novel is told from a daily point of view. It is their life in Thick and blood. But, is the dominent community potrayed in fair way is a question some may ask.
Overall, arjun has walked the tight rope of writing abount castes. It is a bold attempt.
This is no it a untold story but a story with no to be told. One can expect more such stories from around.
And finally, a word about Arjuns cuddalore. Wow. He has weaved the place it to the story. It is almost like janikiramans tanjore or ki. Ra’s Karissal land.
Well we can expect a sequal on pondurangan’s life journey.
